Looking For A Beach near Orlando?

No holiday is complete without a trip (or two) to the beach.  Florida has over 800 miles of fabulous coastline with crystal clear waters on the East Coast and wonderful sandy beaches with tropical palm trees. Some of the best beaches are within a short drive of the Villa but we always remember to go at the weekend to avoid crowds. Here is a summary of what is available when looking for a beach near Orlando.

Daytona is one of the USA’s most famous beaches with 23 miles of wide sandy beach. This is an ideal beach for children, with plenty of space for making sandcastles and drawing in the sand.  Many land speed attempts have been attempted at Daytona Beach, Sir Malcolm Cambell reached 276.16mph with Blue Bird on March 7th, 1935 (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_speed_record for further information on land speed records attempted on this beach). You can drive and park on the beach.  Sun beds and boats for hire. Daytona is home to many different events.  So best to check out there website http://www.daytonabeach.com/ before you head off.  If the car show is on, during 27th to 29th March this year, it will be really busy with car enthusiasts.  Other times of year are the Daytona 500 Bike Week, etc.  If you experience a tropical shower there is a bowling alley nearby where you can have some under cover family fun.

South from Daytona Beach, is New Smyrna Beach on the central East coast. New Smyrna Beach is a local surfing hangout and has a laid back community feel.  There are less crowds as it is not as famous as many of the other Orlando beaches.  There is scuba diving, swimming, golf and hiking - ideal for outdoor enthusiasts.  There are 13 miles of white sandy beaches. Smyrna Dunes Park is a conservation area.  Readers of Florida Monthly Magazine rated New Smyrna Beach as the “Best Beach in Florida”.

Between Daytona Beach and Cocoa Beach, this beach near Orlando is one of Florida’s most undeveloped beach fronts. Approximately 25 miles long with dunes, lagoons, salt marshes and flatlands with not many people visit! There are no facilities at all so you’d need to take your cool box loaded with a picnic!  Three government agencies help to ensure that there is an equal balance between the space programme, care of the local wildlife  and public outdoor pursuits.  Apollo and Playalinda Beaches have some toilets.  If you have children though you might want to stay clear of Playalinda Beach as it is locally known as a nudist beach (the only one in Florida).

COCOA BEACH - 45mins-1 hour by car

Cocoa beach is one of my favourite beaches as it has lovely soft sand and waves you can jump with your children. There is a Pier jutting out 800 feet over the ocean and there are some restaurants, small rides and tourist boutiques. We got some spray on sun lotion in Ron Jons Surf Shop, which is always worth a browse.  At Cocoa village there are some other clothes shops, boutiques, restaurants and fast food joints - great to browse and feast away from the midday sun.

Satellite Beach is a city in Brevard County, with a population of about 10,000.  There are plenty of beach front condos and a real sense of community. Shallow waters make paddling perfect for little ones and there is a children’s playground and Samson’s Island Nature Park to visit.

WEST COAST
CLEARWATER - 1 1/2 to 2 hours by car

Clearwater beach is home to pristine white beaches, crystal clear gulf waters, tropical sunshine and a friendly welcome.  Situated on the Pinellas Peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico on the west and Tampa Bay on the east.  This is a popular tourist destination for sunworhippers, watersports enthusiasts also love this beach near Orlando. The water is warmer than on the East coast so better for swimming.  The waves are gentle, so better for little ones too.  If you are really lucky you might spot on of the doplhins that also love the warm waters!  Plenty of restaurants to choose from when the sun goes down.  Or why not mix a half day at Busch Gardens in Tampa with a half day at the beach.  Remember to bring your sun lotion.

South from Clearwater, St Pete’s has about four miles of lovely sandy beach. Great for fresh seafood, renowned museums (check out the Salivdor Dali one - it is ace) and shopping.  St. Pete’s Pier is a year round attraction, the inverted pyramid is a landmark.  Plenty of festivals happen at St. Pete’s so worth checking before you go.
